Freelance medical editor
Experienced editorial support for medical and healthcare content
I’m a freelance medical editor with 30 years’ experience in editing and publishing, backed by a degree in human biology and professional editorial training.
I work with medical and healthcare content of all kinds, from reports, educational materials and slide decks to expert reports, journal articles, public-health resources and content for healthcare professionals and patients.
My job is to make sure the finished material is clear, accurate and consistent – and that the details are right.
That might mean copyediting a complex medical document, giving something a final proofread before publication, checking references and citations, or spotting inconsistencies and ambiguities that have crept in along the way.
Whatever the material, I bring an experienced, independent pair of eyes to it.
Jo has been working on my medico-legal reports for over a year. Her work is detailed and precise with extensive cross-checking of fact and opinion. Copyediting is analytical, improving clarity and removing ambiguity. She has an immense grasp of medical terms and their meanings, and delivers on time and on budget. I no longer submit my reports without her final review.

How I can help
Some documents need a thorough edit. Others are already in good shape but need a careful final check. I’m happy working at either end of that spectrum – and anywhere in between.
My services include:
Copyediting
Improving clarity, flow and readability while preserving the author's meaning and voice.
Proofreading
A careful final check for errors, inconsistencies and anything that doesn't look quite right before your material goes out into the world.
References and citations
Checking references and citations for accuracy, consistency, completeness and adherence to the required style.
Editorial quality assurance
An independent final review of medical content, including material produced or edited using AI, to pick up inconsistencies, ambiguities, omissions and other problems that may have been missed.
Plain-English editing
Making complex medical information easier to understand without losing important detail or changing its meaning.
Medical content in all its forms
Over the years, I’ve worked on a very wide range of medical and healthcare material.
That includes medical communications and health education, medico-legal reports, medical news and features, public-health publications, journal articles, reports, slide decks, training and educational materials, patient information and web content.
So if your particular project isn't mentioned here, that doesn't mean I can't help. If it involves medicine, healthcare or the life sciences and needs an experienced editorial eye, please feel free to ask.

About me
I’ve worked with words for 30 years, initially in publishing and increasingly in medical and healthcare editing.
My education in human biology means I’m comfortable with complex medical and scientific material, while my editorial experience means I know when something doesn't quite add up – whether that's an ambiguous sentence, an inconsistent claim, a reference that doesn't match its citation or a small error that's survived several previous rounds of review.
I enjoy that kind of detail. More importantly, I know which details matter.
Clients tend to come back to me because I'm thorough, straightforward to work with and reliable. Many have worked with me for years.
I have worked with Jo for over a decade. She is simply one of the best editors I have ever worked with. She is 100% reliable, extremely professional and her eye for detail and identification of potential for misinterpretation are second to none. She is also a lovely person with a very infectious laugh!
